All photographs from Mackie Images are going to hosted at Photoshelter.com. Why? Because over the years I’ve often found myself at a bit of loss while trying to maintain and update where and how images are going to be posted. If I can’t figure out where my own photographs are, how is someone else going to find them?!?!

I rarely watch anything on YouTube. Occasionally a friend will forward me something entertaining but even then, I find myself turning it off before the end. For whatever reason though, I decided to check out YouTube, for nothing in particular except to maybe stumble upon something unique. I typed in ‘photography’ and lo and behold a bunch of videos appeared. Most of them were some sort of photography tutorial; a video on food photography, or commercial photography.

I did eventually see something cool, so I thought I would share it. It’s a short video on time lapse photography and it’s quite impressive. So here it is:

Over the past month or so I’ve spent a little time beta testing a new online photo editor, picnik. With the beta banner officially being removed the other day, I think it’s a tool every photographer should check out, whether you’re a beginner or professional. Although it will never overtake Photoshop or Lightroom, it may be very helpful for quick and easy fixes. That being said, there are some more advanced features, such as UNSHARP MASK, that are truly useful and provide a one-up on say, Picasa

Picnik is definitely easy to learn and is actually quite fun to use as well. There are a ton of creative features, from the basic B&W and sepia conversions, to infra-red, night vision, doodling and pencil sketch. If you want to give your online images that gallery look, there is a great museum matte feature that adds a border and matte similar to any you would see in real gallery.

I hope to spend a little more time with this and look forward to further picniks. Oh…one note, if you are uploading large images, be patient, especially if you have a slow internet connection. Lastly, there are two versions, one providing the photo editor for free, the other a paid premium version.

Last night I was very fortunate to find myself in the same room with National Geographic photographer Sam Abell. Since the 70′s Sam has traveled the world in search of that perfect photograph. In my humble opinion, I think he’s found, or should I say taken, many.

Working at the Art Wolfe gallery here in Seattle I’ve had the opportunity to not only sit, chat and head out for some shoots with Art himself, but due in large part to the first-rate facilities at the gallery, including a digital photography school, I’ve been able to enjoy many a evenings of wine and cheese listening to some pretty damn good photographers, including Sam, Jay Maisel, and Greg Gorman (and will hopefully catch some upcoming classes with Freeman Patterson too) as they share their experiences over the past many years. But last night was something special. Sam is a truly genuine man and his passion for traveling and photography is so evident, his words so articulate, that you feel like (and are) in the presence of someone who is more than just a photographer. At times, listening to Sam share his wisdom and experience, his methods for capturing images, takes on the sounds of poetry.

"Life is about taking away pictures" he said at one point in the evening. I thought about this and realized that he is right. There are so many times, camera in hand, when you think you’ve got that perfect photograph…until something changes. A breeze, a person, a boat, a bug appears…the image deteriorates into nothing. Or does it? Is it simply changing, into something more unique, more telling of that point in time?

Photography is about stopping time, capturing a moment, and in my opinion, sharing it with those who will take a second and think about how or if they fit into the subject; I love it when someone looks at my photographs and sees something different, something they missed. A thought, a dream, an image…it’s real.

After much deliberation and the cancellation of my eastern Europe bike tour (which I just realized I would be in the middle of at this very moment,) I can finally look forward to packing up the B.O.B for a short bike tour in just over a week. Beginning on or around the 11th I’ll have my brother drop me off at Whistler, BC, where I’ll hop on the bike and begin the adventure north.

Within minutes I’ll find myself climbing into the beautiful coastal range as I pedal my way NE towards Williams Lake, about 250 miles distant. From there it’s time to head west on Bella Coola Highway 20, which apparently is the gateway to a vast wilderness. Mostly paved and hopefully only lightly traveled by RVs and logging trucks, it’s Heckman Pass that I anticipate being the high point of the journey (no pun intended here) as it drops 5,000 ft to the sea. With grades as steep as 18% it should be pretty interesting how a fully-loading skinny-tire bike handles the dirt roads (unlike my Chile bike tour, which consisted of endless "ripio" too but I was riding a mountain bike.)

If time permits I hope to venture off the main road to allow time for exploring some of the remote areas south of HWY 20, including Ts’yl-os Provincial Park , which is home to Chilko Lake, the largest, natural, high elevation lake in Canada as well as prime grizzly bear habitat. Hmmm…not sure if bear spray will do much here!

Once I reach Bella Coola, about 600 miles from Whistler, I’ll hop aboard the Discovery Coast Passage ferry heading south through Inside Passage to the tip of Vancouver Island. With enough time I should be able to bike down the island to Nanaimo, (passing, unfortunately, Alert Bay, a place I recommend everyone visit via sea kayak to experience the thrill of being face-to-face with the orcas) a short ferry ride back to the mainland, Vancouver and life as we all know it.

Besides the simple joy of exploring a new area and dealing with the unexpected mishaps that are part of wandering in more remote areas, my goal is to photograph this natural landscape to the best of my abilities. So check back in a couple weeks and I should have, what I hope, will be some pretty cool photos and stories of the area.

Below is a very simple map of the general route I’ll be on, although as I read more and more about the area there are what appear to be some pretty spectacular dirt roads I can take instead of section on HWY 97.
