I was approached recently by someone interested in a sailing picture of mine. She was convinced she had found the perfect photograph for her boss and now all she had to do was call me up and order it. "Why yes, I can definitely get you that photograph ma’am…what size are you looking for?" Her answer was a bit unexpected; she was looking for a large print, a size had yet to print. Matter of fact, she was looking for a digital print of four feet on the long end.

So this got me thinking, and asking, just what are the print size limitations of my Canon Rebel XT digital camera? I instantly posed the question on two of my favorite photography forums: dpreview.com and fredmiranda.com about printing up to, and beyond, a 24×36 photograph. The responses were quite surprising. Below is a shortened list of what others who had the same or similar Canon digital camera said:

"No problem going that large from an 8mp image."

"It
absolutely depends on the quality of the image itself. If it is truly
sharp where it is supposed to be sharp, you can go even bigger than
that. If it’s marginal, you can make great-looking 4×6 prints all day
long but you won’t be happy with posters."

"I have sold about 40 24 x 36 prints, most taken with a 6mp camera (d60)"

"I have printed 36" x 44" on several occasions and the result is great.
Keep in mind that a nice Wide format inkjet printer will only need/use
150dpi. There will be very little enlarging/interpolating going on when
shooting at max res. As for The Bicubic Smoothing, that is a setting in
the prefs, set it to Bicubic Interpolation as default for best
enlargements. Canvas will also hide any digital noise introduced by low
light."

But the most surprising response was:

24X36 is easy for the 350D. As with any picture size, it needs to be a sharp image.
I am getting 42" X 6X" prints on glossy paper that are just great.

So needless to say I was quite happy to hear the printing capabilities of my 8 megapixel Canon digital camera. As soon as I make the print I’ll be sure to let everyone know how it turns out.

It was a quick trip but a trip none the less. Every time I visit Whitefish, Montana, I’m immediately captivated by the rising peaks to the east that provide the first glimpse of the rocky mountains and Glacier National Park. I’ll post some additional photographs from a short day hike up to the Sperry Chalet, but in the meantime, here’s a reminder that winter is on its way.
