I love fall. It’s my favorite time of the year. Cool mornings followed by warm days. Shades of yellow and red, earthy tones permeate the landscape as leaves foretell a brisk season ahead. If I can’t have fall though, let it be spring.

It felt like just yesterday that a friend and I were stuffing the car full of unused bike gear, tired of the ice-encrusted roads and unpredictable weather patterns in Whitefish, Montana. We had some spare time, a couple days at least, and it made complete sense to spend this time driving the 14 hours south for some Moab mountain biking. Why you ask?  Although it has lost some of its original allure, mountain biking in Moab still rocks (no pun intended), especially in the early spring when the crowds have yet to swarm the area. It was a bit of a risk to be sure. April is still early, even in Utah, where snow can fall and morning temps easily hover in the 30s – 40s. But who cares. The sun shines in Utah more than in Montana; plus I had a new Giant Anthem mountain bike to play with.

So we rode for four days. It was spectacular. We encountered small patches of snow on north-facing aspects of the Porcupine Trail but otherwise the Moab trails were in perfect shape. Below are some mountain bike photos from the trip.

This past summer was somewhat of an oddity for me. That is, I spent much of my free time building up my photography portfolio rather than cycling. Sure I was able to embark on some great cycling tours, but for the past 7 years most of my free time was spent training and racing mountain bikes, road bike and cyclocross bikes at the elite level.

As the temperatures dip and mornings are cool, I’m starting to get the urge to race a bit more, and with the cyclocross season kicking off last weekend here in Seattle, I think I may spend fewer hours snapping pictures on the weekends and instead head out for some cyclocross racing. While I’ll continue to work on taking photographs (and happily look forward to another ski season and the opportunity to work on winter photography) I’ll also be posting updates on how the cyclocross season goes. So please, check out my cycling website, which will include race reports, some bike & gear reviews and the occasional nutrition tip.

So here I am, back at the "office" for one day and already I find myself thinking back to last Monday when I was pedaling my way north from the rugged gold-rush town of Lillooet, British Columbia.  For the next 7 days I would bike, boat and bus my way through some of the most diverse and beautiful geography anywhere. Termed the Discovery Coast Circle Tour, I think it’s fair to say this could be one of the best kept secrets in North American bike touring. Full story coming soon…
