Taking advantage of stellar early season conditions, a group of us headed north to HWY 20 and the North Cascades, beating out a seasonal closure that shuts down the highway to all (except those w/ snow mobiles.) While coverage was thin in spots, it was an opening day not to be forgotten. Morning light was [...]
The wife pulls the family to the coast of Washington, for what could be her last surf weekend of the year…and my last chance to catch some sunset colors before old-man winter throws the blanket over our eyes
It was a bummer I didn’t have my camera on hand when a bobcat (or was it a lynx?) scurried past me towards the end of our mountain bike ride on the eastern side of the Cascade mountains last weekend. It was a fitting end to a nearly perfect fall ride though – cool & [...]
This photo was taken during a short two-day bike tour from Sisters to Oakridge, Oregon, via the McKenzie Pass—Santiam Pass Scenic Byway. Closed in the winter, this road is a true delight to pedal…as long as you start early to avoid heat and summer traffic. Making the below photo your desktop wallpaper is easy: click [...]
What a finicky winter we’re having here in the Pacific NW. Early on we had more snow then we knew what to do with. Last weekend, for this ski tour to Harding Mountain, we enjoyed spring-like corn near the summit and about 4-6 inches of hoar-frost powder in the valley and more shaded spots. Harding [...]
You’ve seen it many times before, in magazines, calendars and postcards. A surreal-looking sun sinking below the horizon or sliding behind a mountain peak, streaks of light emanating from the center. Last time I checked, I didn’t think those streaks were natural, so how did the photographer do this? You might be thinking a fancy [...]
When one thinks of traveling in Vietnam, you’re more likely to imagine floating down the Mekong River in a dug out canoe than dodging towering karst formations in a sea kayak while enjoying the tranquil waters of Bai Tu Long Bay. I’m here to say, change your perceptions of Vietnam. Yes, go for the culture, [...]
Where else can you mountain bike on the side of an active volcano? The mountain bike trails that skirt the site of past Mt St Helens eruptions are truly one-of-a-kind. I don’t know of any other place in the US, if not the world, that offers such a unique and inspiring ride. View More Mt [...]
Nothing can really prepare you for the streets of Saigon, Vietnam, where crossing the street is truly a risky venture. There really are no rules of the road here. Everything goes. The below video clip was shot with a Canon G9, which was a great back-up camera by the way
Located at an elevation of 4500 ft (1500 meters) Dalat, Vietnam, provides a much needed respite from the searing heat seen elsewhere in the country. It’s a land of rolling hills covered in towering pines, while hidden valleys reveal fields of artichokes and small rice-growing operations. It’s also one of the few spots in Vietnam [...]
After maybe a week traveling through the Mekong region and southern coast of Vietnam, I realized something about the food there. It’s all extremely fresh. I mean really fresh, as in it was killed that day (maybe the day prior) or pulled from the garden that morning. It’s kind of funny really, because here we [...]
It doesn’t necessarily feel like spring here in the Pacific Northwest, but there are signs it’s inevitable. Flowers are sprouting, the snow is melting faster… For a very limited time I’m offering 50% off any photograph that has snow in it! Below is a small selection. There are many reasons to live in the Pacific Northwest, even if it does rain a bit here and there. Sure we have moss sprouting from the roofs of our homes, but now I know that’s a good thing. Mosses cannot survive in polluted air. Like the lichens, they need a healthy atmosphere to survive. [...]
It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 5 years since I embarked on, and survived (barely) my little bike adventure down in Patagonia, Chile. The route, a whole lot of kilometers from El Chalten, Argentina, to Puerto Montt, Chile, would eventually take me just under a month to complete (with 2 rest days.) It [...]
Sometimes you forget why. The other day I was reminded. Below is a photographic journey into the central Washington Cascades for a day of backcountry skiing.
My wife and I left Seattle on Saturday. 14 hours later we were in Salt Lake City. Day one, skiing at Alta. Day two, skate skiing at Solitude. Day three, a backcountry ski tour up Big Cottonwood Canyon. This morning, drove to Steamboat Springs, CO. For the next four days I’ll be dividing my time [...]
The other day I posted a photo of the full moon sinking behind the Olympic Mountains from West Seattle. That image only captured a small section of the Olympic Mountains though. Below I stitched together six images to create a panoramic picture of the entire range. It’s not the cleanest stitching job I’ve ever done, [...]

It’s almost sac-religious NOT to sea kayak if you live in the Pacific Northwest. From the waters of Puget Sound right outside my back door, to the vast water wilderness of Johnstone Strait and British Columbia, I hope this growing selection of sea kayaking photos inspires you to get out and explore. I’m not sure I could survive without my bike. From short rides along the shore of West Seattle, to epic month-long bike tours in Chile, I love to ride. Here are some photos I took along the way. Fine Art Photography Prints are available, as are digital downloads. Contact me for further details. Click HERE [...]

Some abnormally pleasant days in Seattle offer splendid days for sea kayaking off West Seattle. Kayak for two Beached on Beach Drive in West Seattle To see more sea kayaking photos from Seattle, British Columbia and beyond, click HERE
I just posted a quick update on our trip up to Whistler on backcountryskiphotos.com. No ski touring was had, but we did manage to spend a bit of time skate skiing at the new Olympic Park nordic center. And, I was able to capture this one shot before the weather turned, again.
There’s something special about black and white photographs. This one is no exception. Taken on a backcountry ski tour in the Oregon Cascades, it captures the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. For a short time I am offering 12 x 24 prints for only $100. Just in time for the holidays.
