There’s really nothing like it and it’s one of the reasons why the Pacific Northwest rocks. We combined a ski ascent of Mt Adams (12,300 ft), in the southern Washington Cascades, with two days of classic NW mountain biking outside the town of White Salmon and Hood River.

A brief Wikipedia history of Mount Adams. “…a potentially active[6] stratovolcano in the Cascade Range and the second-highest mountain in the U.S. state of Washington.[7] Adams is a member of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, and is one of the arc’s largest volcanoes,[8] located in a remote wilderness approximately 31 miles (50 km) east of Mount St. Helens.”

Here are a few backcountry skiing photos from Mt Adams. We took the main up route, and changed our descent to include the now-classic southwest chutes.

Most people don’t need this in a P&S (point & shoot), let alone a phone. And, if you think about it, the photos people are taking with their phones are most likely going to be shared online, so the file size alone of a 8 MP photo is absolute overkill for sharing.

But enough of that. My first few photos with the Droid X were downright terrible. I mean, I wouldn’t even share them I was so embarrassed (I’m picky, sorry) by the awful resolution. Now, to be fair, the camera/phone was new and I was just starting to play around with it. Recently though, my hopes have been on the rise.

During a Whistler backcountry ski tour last weekend with my brother, for the first time in recent memory, I forget my DSLR. But, I did have my phone, and, of course, the day turned out to be ideal for some backcountry ski photos. So I did what I could. I snapped some shots here and there of the beautiful Coast Mountains, stretching as far as the eye could see, a world of white. Then I discovered the panoramic feature. It took me a few tries to figure out exactly how it worked, but once I did, I was impressed by the technology. Of course, any photo looks amazing on the (relatively) tiny screen of a phone, so it wasn’t until I got home that I could see what the results were. Overall I was pretty impressed.

This last photo was taken the other day on my bike commute home – with Boeing literally just down the road, I see these often. Pretty cool. (the stitching wasn’t perfect here)

The tide out, I waited patiently for the sun to set behind the Olympic Mountains. Experimenting w/ different shutter speeds, I snapped a few surreal seascapes.

While coverage was thin in spots, it was an opening day not to be forgotten.

Morning light was tough for backcountry ski photos, but over the course of the day, the clouds parted and everyone quickly forgot about the long drive from Seattle to get here.


And one last image – a hand-held panoramic, taken from Maple Pass. North Cascades HWY meanders up the valley in the left part of the image as it heads east towards Mazama and Winthrop. Soon after I took this, the sun disappeared, the temperatures dropped to about 10 degrees and we left for Seattle, thankful for what the season has already provided.

It was a fitting end to a nearly perfect fall ride though – cool & crisp, maples leaves leaching reds, greens & yellows. Above 6,000 ft, the western larch, painted in deep yellow hues, began their final life cycle before old man winter takes hold.

Topping out near 7,000 ft (some of the trail-heads start as low as 2,500 ft.) you can literally ride for days on mostly epic, raw singletrack and see nary another mountain biker. You’re more likely to see a few motos (whom we must thank because they put in LOTs of hours maintaining these hard-to-access trails) than anyone else. Otherwise, you’re on your own. You’re hard-earned efforts (hours of climbing) are, in this case, rewarded with a non-stop 10-mile descent towards Lake Chelan.

But the other day I received an email from a friend, who runs an adventure travel company up in Bella Coola (www.wildearth-adventures.com), BC, looking for photos that illustrate the area and can be used on his site.

I immediately thought back to the day, a few years back, when I loaded up the bike and B.O.B. trailer and began the 5-day bike tour from Pemberton, BC, (just north of Whistler) to Bella Coola. It was an amazing bike tour, one that started with a long climb up Duffey Lake Road (an awesome place to access backcountry ski tours BTW) over Cayoosh Pass (in the Lillooet Range) before dropping into the high desert town of Lillooet. From Lilloet it’s pretty much straight north to Williams Lake, after-which you head west again towards Bella Coola. While the entire ride is relatively devoid of traffic, this last section, on HWY 20, from Williams Lake to Bella Coola is pretty much desolate…a true bike touring paradise.

If you ever have the chance to visit this area – on two wheels or four – I highly recommend it. It’s truly a magical place.
