Ian,

you really need a Nikon --(sorry I couldn't resist). I was in the same boat as you are, I had a D70 for just a litte bit over 3 years and I upgraded to a D700 a month ago. It's expensive, heavy and much bigger but it's worth schlepping the additional weight into the backcountry, the picture quality for larger prints is stunning. The day I got the new camera the trusty old D70 was not of interest any more - that's the digital world (I sold it for almost nothing!)

Good luck with your future choice (the new D5/MKII is a good one too! - don't bother with the original one)

Rock Harbor is one of our favorite places on the Cape. The photo is great as is the fresh seafood at Cap't Cass. For the best lobster roll on Cape Cod...Try Young's Fish Market. Right next to the building in the photo. Oh...And don't miss the incredible sunsets at Rock Harbor.

Exciting! Which route will you be taking? I was at Camp Muir on Saturday and the conditions looked perfect for an ascent. Even if you're trying to go to bed early before summit day, be sure to catch the sunset at base camp -- those were my best shots when I climbed Rainier last year. A tripod comes in handy for those low light shots too...

Hi Candace,

I ask myself this question quite often and to be honest I go back and forth. The beauty of having your own printer is that you can print whenever you want versus having to place an order and wait for it to be shipped, etc. Plus you have greater flexibility in sizes. I’ve only had this printer for a little while now and when I do print with it the prints are fantastic. If you are only going to print common sizes – 5x7, 8x10, 8x12, 11x14, 16x20…than ordering prints online probably is easier and cheaper in the long run. It’s when you start getting into odd sizes (and different papers) that having your own printer is definitely more beneficial and probably worth the cost.

All that being said it is painful to watch how quickly you can go through ink especially if printing large-format ones. I haven’t tried any generic ink with this printer yet but most likely will because in the past (on a different printer) they seemed to work fine. What does really irk me is that you cannot recycle Epson print cartridges…bad business if you ask me.

Thanks! Ian Mackie

I am wondering if you feel it is worth running through all the ink cartridges to print your own work, versus having it printed for you? I ask because I am a "green" photographer who has recently decided to make a career out of it, and I'm trying to fine tune the expense side of things. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Matt - I believe my experience with this paper is very similar to that of any new product we really want to believe in. That is, initially I was pretty disappointed with the print results as colors were faded and showed no pop. That being said, after that initial print job, subsequent prints have actually come out pretty well and look almost identical to Epson's heavyweight matte paper I also use. Furthermore, you can't even tell the paper is recycled; that is, there are hardly any visible specks in the paper itself. Bravo to Red River for this one! To be honest I don't think I would use the paper for large gallery prints but I would, and WILL, definitely use it for cards and smaller prints.

How have you got on with this recycled paper? It would really be intereting to hear your thoughts. I've looked up the suppliers, and they will ship to the UK!

Of course is I'd have to cinsider the carbon cost of shiping the paper ;-)
