Free Picture Contest? Read The Fine Print First

Please tell me this is NOT ok. Not sure if this photography contest is supported by National Geographic or Energizer just paid them a lot of money to be affiliated with it, but regardless the ‘official rules’ disclose something that appears to be more and more common with online photo contests:

For all Photos: No photos will be acknowledged or returned. By entering a photo in this Contest, Entrant grants a nonexclusive, transferable, royalty-free, worldwide license to edit, adapt and publish any or all of the Photos, and Sponsor may use them in any media without attribution or compensation to the entrant, his/her successors or assigns, or any other entity.

Up until recently I honestly didn’t read the fine print for the few picture contests I’ve participated in. That’s surely going to change though because although I do and can appreciate (and enjoy) some recoginition for my photography, I have to ask myself if it’s really worth giving my images away…for ever. And unless photographers STOP submitting their images to these contests, nothing will change. Unfortunately the number of photographers reading the fine print is probably pretty small…
